Paul Caponigro
American photographer Paul Caponigro (1932- ) found his calling in the communion with untouched nature and the inner life of the earth itself. Over the course of a career spanning more than fifty years now he has explored the inner beauty of the natural landscape with a contemplative and reverent eye. His photographs all seem to evoke an atmosphere of purity and stillness, and a kind of spiritual silence behind the visual surfaces. His earliest work was done in the countryside of his native New England, and he later travelled to Ireland and England to photograph ancient stone megaliths, and to Japan for studies of temples, shrines, and formal gardens. Most recently he has photographed a variety of still-life arrangements using natural materials such as leaves, shells, and stones found near his home in Maine.
