Sebastião Salgado
Brazilian documentary photographer Sebastião Salgado (1944- ) originally trained as an economist, but switched to photography in 1973. His large-scale documentary projects have taken him to every region of the world, photographing the lives of the dispossessed and forgotten. His most recent project Genesis is an effort to find inspiration and hope as a counterweight to the sense of despair generated by his earlier work. For Genesis, Salgado is seeking out those places still left on the planet that have survived in their primeval purity, as yet untouched by human nature.
