Josef Koudelka

Koudelka"

Josef Koudelka (1938- ) has now achieved the stature of one of the true greats of photography, finding himself compared with figures like Goya and Shakespeare because of the elemental depth and power of his images. His earliest professional experience was working with theatre companies and magazines in Prague. In the 1960s he worked on photographing the gypsies in Czechoslovakia, and in 1968 his photographic records of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia brought him international recognition, even though they had to be published anonymously. For his most recent project, Chaos, Koudelka has adopted the panoramic format in documenting the devastation in the European landscape.
